We are currently moving into new forms of community development, where the needs of both the seniors and youth are an extension of our traditional program delivery model. We are looking to create new community partnerships and develop new models to connect students and young people with seniors.
YACS PROGRAM – Young Adults Connecting with Seniors: This program was designed as an extension of our school programs by encouraging post-secondary students in an outreach program by volunteering with isolated seniors. This pilot project is intended to contribute to the well-being of seniors and develop new collaborative arrangements with post-secondary institutions and CSRS in order to create legitimate intergenerational opportunities for students.
East Meets West: In November, 2005 the United Way of Calgary and Area providing funding for a pilot project in the community of East Village. This program was intended to create new partnerships with youth community stakeholders and various community groups.
We have worked closely with the Alex seniors outreach workers have helped to identify seniors living in isolation and on social assistance. Westside Kings Church also participated in this project by providing youth volunteers who were interested in meeting with the seniors.
